Why Sir Walter Buffalo is Australia’s Favourite Grass

Buffalo grass has a long history in Australia, having been born, bred, and widely used here for many years. Buffalo lawns were once coarse and had sharp leaf blades but have since been vastly improved upon.

Sir Walter Buffalo grass is a newer variant that is soft, able to withstand wear and tear, and has the best shade tolerance over any other grass turf. Their low invasive properties and capability to withstand a diverse range of climates makes Sir Walter grass an excellent all-round choice for Australian gardens.

Fantastic Qualities

Sir Walter grass is a superior broad leaf grass turf, which is soft to the touch compared to other grass varieties. It can tolerate heat, drought, shade and salt. Sir Walter turf is a creeping grass with surface runners, which means edges and borders are easy to maintain.

Great for lawns that get lots of activity from kids and pets, it’s easy to enjoy a game of backyard footy, or fetch with the dog, without worrying about lawn damage.

Easy Maintenance

Soft leaf buffalo grasses like the Sir Walter are easy to maintain and grow well in sandy, salty, and clay-based soils, thriving in full sun and tolerating shade. The Sir Walter Buffalo has a thick surface runners that form a dense coverage, which help prevent weeds from invading.

Mowing Sir Walter Grass

Keep mowing heights for Sir Walter turf higher than other turf varieties, with a recommended height of 20-40 mm to maintain optimum health. Aim for increased heights in areas with a lot of shade or diminished light to maximise its ability to absorb sunlight. Areas with a lot of sunlight can have these mowing heights lowered.

Herbicide Resistant

Sir Walter Buffalo grass performs well in terms of weed infestation, so weed spraying will not always be necessary. While Sir Walter Buffalo grass is herbicide resistant, the application of some weed killers should be avoided, especially those meant for broadleaf weeds. Herbicides containing Bromoxyl or MCPA as an active ingredient are safer, while Dicamba should be avoided.
