Best Seasons for Laying Grass Rolls
Areas of Australia like Victoria and Tasmania are prone to widely fluctuating climate conditions, ranging from frosty sub-zero winters to scorching 40-degree summers. These extremes can damage vulnerable new turf and are best avoided. Purchase and lay down grass rolls during spring and autumn if you can. These seasons tend to offer the most moderate weather conditions. Rainier periods are also great for helping your new lawn establish.
Aim for Spring
Spring is by far the best time to lay your new lawn. Like many other plants, grass naturally comes out of hibernation and begins actively growing and establishing deep roots during this season. Laying out turf during spring helps it establish quickly with minimal maintenance required. There’s also less chance of damage from extreme weather conditions.
For the best results, avoid earlier, colder periods of spring and instead wait for warmer conditions. You should also choose a time where you can minimise traffic on the lawn.
Laying Turf in Other Seasons
Early autumn, before it gets too cool, is the second-best time to lay new turf. While not advisable, it’s possible to lay turf during winter and summer, however, a lot more maintenance will be required to help it establish.
For example, a new turf laid in summer will need frequent and extensive watering. Grass cannot dry out while it’s establishing and needs to be always kept moist. For a winter lawn installation, check the long-term weather forecast to avoid frosty and excessive cold periods. The main risk is the grass entering a dormant state, so the roots don’t establish well. This will mean a patchy lawn later.
