Fertilising your lawn is an essential part of grass maintenance, like all plants, lawns need nutrients to stay healthy and strong. Although turf can survive without the use of fertiliser, by applying a fertiliser regularly you’ll help to keep your lawn in peak condition and better equipped to deal with tough conditions. In this article, StrathAyr will break down some rules to follow when fertilising your lawn, such as when to do it and how exactly to go about the process.
First Step: Choose Your Fertiliser
Slow-Release Granular fertilisers are recommended for use on most turf varieties. They contain a measured balance of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as a blend of trace elements. These types of fertilisers only require a small amount per square meter compared to organic or liquid fertilisers.
Use a Lawn Spreader
Using a lawn spreader will help you to get even coverage over your entire lawn.
Water Your Fertiliser
Once you have applied your granular fertiliser, it is imperative to water it, to avoid leaf burn and so that the active ingredients of the fertiliser soak into the roots of the grass.
When to Apply Your Fertiliser
The best time to fertilise is when your turf is actively growing, for warm season varieties such as TifTuf Bermuda, Sir Walter Buffalo and Eureka Kikuyu this period is usually from September through to late April. Cool season grass varieties like RTF Tall Fescue or BlueBlend Premium are actively growing all year and will need to be fertilised all year round.
We recommend that you fertilise your lawn three times per year. For warm season varieties, once in Spring when your turf comes out of dormancy, once in Summer and once again in Autumn. However, cool season varieties will require fertilising every 8-10 weeks.
